Recent years have seen an incredible rise in fast fashion and the increased amount of clothing filling our landfills is one that needs immediate action.
We were intrigued by this collaboration, as it is completely in line with the way fashion should be moving forward - wasting less and not adding to the already never-ending heaps in our landfills. This is awareness and we need to start making more conscious decisions about our fashion and what we add to our wardrobe on a regular basis.
To learn more about GAZED and their upcoming event SWAP, we asked a few questions:
Who are you and why have you started GAZED?
The fashion industry is a sneaky devil in a pretty dress. GAZED was created in 2018 by three Polish gals who wanted to change that. We were tired of regularly wearing and throwing away our overpriced fast-fashion clothes. We couldn’t stand the lack of transparency of brands that we invest our money in. We realised it was not only bad for the environment but it is also a huge waste of time. Fast fashion has to go! We know it can be done better and smarter.
And what do we mean by that?
We believe that small changes can have a big impact and in this case, changing our habits can make our home a better place. To show you how to do it, we created a fusion between love for nature and appreciation for fashion and art in all its forms.
Art does not only belong to museums and galleries, it needs to be out in public.
What if you could spread the environmental message and support independent local art all at once? GAZED was created exactly from that internal need, to connect two completely separate things to show that being eco doesn’t have to be boring.
What made you decide to put the event together?
The SWAP idea came to our mind for the first time in January. We realised we have so many clothes we don’t wear anymore but we don’t want to throw them away. So we organised a very small swap between our friends and it was a success. Everybody loved the idea and we decided that it would be an annual thing. After a month we were approached by Zibel to co-organise a new swap. This time, however, we got the opportunity to make it much bigger. Zibel teamed up with Fashion Revolution and was looking for people who were experienced in organising swaps. They found the photos from our last home swap on social media.
When they approached us we are over the moon as we really admire what they are doing. Collaborations with them was a no brainer for us and we were very excited about it. Our ideas and principles about the fashion industry was on the same page and there was an immediate connection. We knew exactly how everything would look like and that collaboration turned out to be one of the best things that happened to us.
Who is Zibel?
Zibel is Malta's dedicated waste NGO which carries out education, awareness and clean-ups around the Maltese Islands. The registered non profit has collected over 65 tons of waste from the Maltese environment over the past 2 years and continues to do this on a monthly basis. Zibel also brings the Seabin to Malta in partnership with Strand Marine, as part of a larger effort to combat plastics washing up on our shore.
How did you get together? Why you are collaborating?
Fashion Revolution got us all together. We did not ask many questions as we knew about their work and engagement in the issues that are dear to our hearts.
We share the same values.
What is SWAP exactly?
Swapping is sharing your garments with people gathered to experience the fun of caring about the Earth and making a step towards conscious living. A swap is an event where you can gain like-minded friends while updating your wardrobe.
